(Waterfall That Went Silent) is a temporary sound installation and place for reflection that aims to remind us of the roar of the waterfall at Stora Sjöfallet/Stuormuorkkegårttje which is said to have been heard all the way from Saltoluokta and disappeared together with large amount of reindeer herding lands after Sweden started hydropower developments in the valley at the beginning of the 20th century. The installation reflects on human drive for technological progress and the need for resources and energy over natural and cultural environment. And the values that are lost in this process. All of this in relation to indigenous people who have lived in this place for more than 7000 years and still counting. Holmön in the Baltic Sea (northern Sweden). The shelter stands adjacent to a scenic hiking trail on Trappudden in a coastal nature reserve. The land uplift is evident here – the shingle fields covered in beautiful ancient lichens. The structure is inspired by an old sea mark – a beacon. The top of the building is at about the same level as the sea was when the first people started to inhabit Holmön. Each division of the facade represents 100 years of land uplift. This is a look-out structure and a shelter for an overnight stay giving the travelers a cozy retreat with framed views towards the lighthouse on the neighboring island Fjäderägg. Due to the natural constraints of the site building elements were prefabricated and transported by boat to be dropped into to ocean and naturally transported by the waves onto the shore. On site the structure was erected and installed without the use of any machinery. The structure rests directly on the rocks and to resist the harsh winds the structure reuses old cable wires anchored in surrounding stones that previously supported a sea sign no longer in use. The otherwise closed structure has a skylight installed at the top to bring in natural light. A small hatch in the floor reveals an opening to the shingle fields below serving as a space to gather around and to place your camping stove. Stone found on site operates as counterweights assisting the users in interacting with the large opening hatch. The house sits on a concrete pier foundation anchored in the bedrock 2-3 meters below ground surface to minimize CO2e from the building foundation and to minimize the building footprint on the ground itself. The elevation of the buiding also serves as a visual threshold between the interior life of the building and the public road just outside while also enhancing the view of the shore further across the road.&nbsp; The volume of the house was to a large extent dictated by the plan regulations restricting the maximum building height to +12m above sea level and with a min. 20° roof angle.Estimated to be completed in August 2026. Equipped with a face-detecting camera, the painting adopts this emerging definition for ‘impression’ to assign it’s own value. Inspired by the nature of the artist’s own conversations with Italians during his residency at Italian research centre FABRICA; the work embodies an endlessly auto-generated realtime multilingual conversation between a Swedish and an Italian-speaking chatbot translated through Google Translate. Conversation is initiated by the Swedish-speaking computer sending “Hej.” (“Hello.”) to the Italian-speaking computer via Google Translate for translation to Italian (and English for the sake of explanation) which then becomes the input for the Italian-speaking chatbot. The program then keeps looping two computers feeding each-other’s responses until termination. The conversation highlights the level of sophistication today’s language modelling algorithms has achieved, but also the absurdity of machine cognition, as the program is not able to appreciate the meaning of what is being talked about.
